 Internship Description

  • Help plan, organize, and execute BMC’s largest annual event, the BMC Gala on May 5, 2012
  • Play a key role in organizing the Gala’s extensive silent auction
  • Promote events through social media, online listings, grassroots marketing, and public relations activities
  • Research potential sponsors, vendors, and auction item donors
  • Proofreading, copywriting, and copy editing for BMC Inspire newsletter and other publications

    Internship Prerequisites

  • Must be able to intern at least 10-12 hours/week (unpaid)
  • Background/ interest in PR, marketing, communications, or related field
  • Professional demeanor in the office, at events, and answering all phones

Description:

The Communications Department of The Home for Little Wanderers is currently recruiting an enthusiastic and resourceful intern. The Home for Little Wanderers is a nationally renowned, private, non-profit child and family service agency. It has been part of the Massachusetts landscape for over 200 years, making it the oldest agency of its kind in the nation and one of the largest in New England. Originally founded as a orphanage in 1799, The Home today plays a leadership role in delivering services to thousands of children and families each year through a system of residential, community-based and prevention programs, direct care services, and advocacy. The Public Relations Intern will work out of The Home’s Administrative Office at 271 Huntington Ave. and may travel to offsite meetings and events with the Public Relations Manager and/or Director of Communications when needed. During the internship, the Public Relations Intern will be exposed to a variety of fields related to marketing communications including public relations, advertising, Web 2.0, and writing.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Public Relations Manager and/or Director of Communications
  • Assist in writing pitch letters to press and producing materials needed for events and programs such as press releases, media plans, and press kits.
  • Work closely with the Public Relations Manager in the planning and promotion of The Home’s Voices & Visions art and creative writing exhibit in addition to the Voices & Visions fundraising gala and other special projects.
  • Manage and route media coverage about The Home for Little Wanderers and its programs.
  • Work with Public Relations Manager to update social media sites.
  • Research and update media lists and other various duties as assigned.
  • Shadow Public Relations Manager to gain an understanding of roles in a development/communications department in a non-profit setting.
  • Assist with other projects as assigned.                                  

Education/Experience:

Excellent skills in organization, communication – written and verbal – and attention to detail. Ability to work collaboratively with others and take initiative. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as the ability to learn and use software applications, is also required. Knowledge of Web 2.0 platforms (for example, Facebook and Twitter) and managing photos preferred. Interest in pursuing a communications-related career a plus. Open to undergraduate and graduate students.

Public Relations Internship @ American Diabetes Association

Summary: The American Diabetes Association is looking for a college student interested in communications/pr, fundraising/non-profit work, and event planning to participate in an internship with the American Diabetes Association.  This position will have a specific focus on the Father of the Year Awards Dinner, the signature corporate fundraising event for the American Diabetes Association.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with media, PR and communications outreach- including creating media lists, maintaining press clip files, writing news releases, pitching feature stories, writing articles for newsletters
  • Work with Event Manager and Father’s Day Council on day-of-event logistics.
  • Work with Event Manager and Father’s Day Council on event collateral (Ad Journal, Signage etc)
  • Solicit in-kind donations through cold-calling and letter writing for auction and day-of-event donations
  • Assist Special Events Team with special projects and administrative duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skill Required: Effective written and oral communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills are required.  A working knowledge of Microsoft Office is a must.

Other Requirements: This is an unpaid internship, based in the Framingham office.  This opportunity is 8+ hrs/week (January- June) and will be supervised by the Manager of Special Events through daily meetings.  Attendance at the 2012 Father of the Year Event on June 12, 2012 is mandatory.

TWO Available Internships @ Toxic Action Center

Since 1987, Toxics Action Center has assisted more than 700 community groups working to prevent and clean up toxic pollution in their communities. Toxics Action Center provides organizing and strategic assistance to community groups working to clean up toxic waste sites, pressure companies to reduce the use of toxic chemicals. We also work proactively to promote clean, renewable energy and zero waste. 1. Social Media and Web Outreach Internship 

As part of our company’s 25th Anniversary celebration in March 2012, Toxics Action Center will raise awareness of the organization and our work across New England, though a program of events, media outreach, and social/new media campaigns.  We are currently looking for an intern to assist developing materials related to our 25th Anniversary, and who wants to gain experience in media outreach, planning, social networking.

Responsibilities

  • Help to write and upload content for Toxics Action Center’s 25th Anniversary website, which will highlight 25 years of victories around New England
  • Conduct research and execute a regional media plan
  • Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive social networking plan
  • Assist in the planning and execution of the 25th annual citizens conference
  • Hold regular office hours and planning meetings with staff

2. Event Planning Internship

Responsibilities

  • Work with Toxics Action staff to develop a semester action plan
  • Sign up community businesses to co-sponsor conference
  • Assist with managing conference logistics
  • Recruit activists to attend conference

Harpoon Brewery; Marketing Internship Winter/Spring 2012

This is a 20-30 hour intern position from early January to mid-May at Harpoon’s Boston, MA brewery

Position Overview:

Opportunity for hands-on experience with craft brewing marketing team.

Candidate Profile:

Beacon Hill Village; Marketing Intern


Position Overview: The Marketing Intern works directly with the Marketing Director for the Village and will assist in all facets of marketing, public relations, events, and outreach projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with marketing and public relations projects including media relations

Must be creative, some graphic design experience helpful. Student should be proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, as well as be familiar with Publisher.

Hours: 10-12 hours per week through semester—Mondays and Thursdays. Some evening and weekend events may be involved. Working some hours at home is an option.

Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) Cleanup Intern

CRWA Background:

One of the country’s oldest watershed organizations, Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) was formed in 1965 in response to public concern about the declining condition of the Charles. Since its earliest days of advocacy, CRWA has figured prominently in major clean-up and watershed protection efforts, working with government officials and citizen groups from 35 Massachusetts watershed towns from Hopkinton to Boston. CRWA’s mission is to use science, advocacy and the law to protect, preserve and enhance the Charles River and its watershed.

Description:

CRWA is seeking an intern for spring 2012 to help organize our Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup, taking place on April 14, 2012. This will be the 13th Annual Earth Day Cleanup and is the largest one day river cleanup in the nation! Last year’s cleanup took place across 22 communities and involved approximately 3000 volunteers. The project brought together many diverse people and groups, all with the same goal: to clean up the river and improve their local environment. The Cleanup Intern will spearhead coordination of this incredible event by working as Chairperson of the Cleanup Steering Committee, which has representatives from state and local organizations. Responsibilities include volunteer recruitment and communication, public relations and media outreach, logistics, and grant writing and fundraising.

Our intern schedules are flexible within normal business hours, but we require a commitment of at least 20 hours per week. In many cases, interns have been able to coordinate these unpaid positions with their school programs so that they get college credit.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Good writing and research skills.
  • CRWA prefers candidates who are able to work at least 20 hours per week and make at least a three month commitment. The intern must be available to assist with the clean up on Saturday, April 14, 2012.
  • An interest in environmental/community issues; relevant coursework is helpful but not required.
  • Comfortable working both independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
  • Access to a car and valid driver’s license is helpful.

Campus Outreach & Marketing Internship @ Hostelling International

Overview:

Hostelling International New England (HI-New England) is the regional affiliate of Hostelling International USA, a network of 63 hostels throughout the United States.  HI-New England is a non-profit organization which oversees seven hostels in Massachusetts and coordinates travel related educational programs in the Boston area.  Our mission is; To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people, through hostelling.

Key Responsibilities: The Campus Outreach and Marketing Intern will work to increase the visibility of the HI-USA brand on college campuses by coordinating free travel workshops and collaborating with campus organizations to sponsor other appropriate events.  The intern will:

  • Recruit speakers for a monthly travel workshop series (intern may also present workshops)
  • Present HI-USA workshops, such as women travel solo or world travel 101
  • In addition to established workshops intern will create engaging workshop topics such as; alternative ways to travel across the USA: Run, Bike, or Drive
  • Recruit audience members, workshops are free and open to the public
  • Publicize workshops on campus
  • Locate and reserve lecture space
  • Represent HI-New England at outreach events
